Set in apartheid era South Africa, the novel revolves around Tambo, a young boy from rural South Africa who was orphaned at a young age. Left alone in his father's kraal, Tambo is forced to serve a villager who claims his late father owed him a number of sheep. Taking the sheep left behind by Tambo's father, the villager becomes his master.
While serving this master, Tambo forms close relationships with both his master's wife and daughter, leading to a sexual relationship with both women. When caught by his master having intercourse with the daughter, Tambo and his friend Njoki, a shepherd, flee the village to avoid punishment.
Finding employment with a white farmer and later in the Johannesburg mines, Tambo rises to the position of head laborer or induna. Despite his success, Tambo vehemently opposes the freedom fighters and is held up as a role model for black people by his white employers.
However, after the collapse of apartheid, Tambo's white masters abandon him and he is shunned by his fellow black Africans. Feeling disconnected and dislocated, Tambo struggles to find his place in the new South Africa.
